1. Lecture Economique de l’Histoire du Japon

An (e)Book (in French) about the History of the Japanese Economy

This book is intended to students studying Japanese language or commerce, as well as to the motivated reader interested in the History and the Economy of Japan.

Preparing a course on the History of the Japanese Economy, the author realised that there were plenty of books about the History of Japan in general as well as about the country’s Economy , especially after 1945, but very few recent books focusing on the purely Economic approach of the whole History of Japan. Therefore, no doubts about the relevance of this book.

INTRODUCTION (in French):

Cet ouvrage s’adresse aux étudiants suivant un programme d’études en langue ou commerce japonais, ou encore au lecteur averti intéressé par l’Histoire et l’Economie du Japon. 

Le Japon de 2014 se trouve à la croisée de nombreux défis de taille, qui sont abordés succinctement en fin de livre. Trois ans après le « tsunami » meurtrier de la région de « Tohoku », où en est le processus de reconstruction ? Le nucléaire va-t-il être remplacé par les Energies Renouvelables ? Comment le pays va-t-il faire face aux défis démographiques ? Le Japon est-il toujours un pays Innovateur ?

En préparant un cours, l’auteur s’est aperçu qu’il y avait, surtout en langue anglaise, assez bien de livres sur l’Histoire et l’Economie du Japon en général, surtout après 1945, mais très peu de livres récents se concentrant sur une lecture (purement) économique de l’Histoire entière du Japon. Malheureusement, il y a encore moins de choix en langue française. D’où, sans doute, la pertinence de cet ouvrage.”

This quote (in French) from Roland Barthes in his book « L’Empire des Signes » summarises very well the concerns of the author in the Japanese social, economic and cultural mosaic. The increasing globalisation of the last decades have brought the manager, as well as the citizen of the world, to make the effort to understand and to accept other ways of thinking.

The objective of this work, with its social, economic and cultural perspectives, corresponds to this approach: it consists in, taking a step back, starting an in depth reflexion about the links or analogies between the economy and the culture in Japan. The author begins with the observation that some elements are linked and opens discussion leads.

Having stayed 30 months (from Octobre 1992 to April 1995) in Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan, having traveled a lot inside the country, the author of this chronic wishes, by sharing his everyday adventures and his trips, to give his readers a good idea of all what Japan was offering in the nineties.

Sharing his academic, touristic, cultural and social experience, from his contacts with the inhabitants of Kyoto and of the rest of the country, the author shows to his readers aspects of Japan little known in the West, details often not perceived by foreign tourists touring in Japan.

8. A la recherche du Patrimoine Culturel du Japon

An (e)Book (in French) about Japan’s Cultural Heritage 

This (e)Book, by Philippe Huysveld of GBMC, entitled “Searching for Japan’s Cultural Heritage”, is intended to be a biographical and cultural essay, a testimony, a work of reflection on the cultural heritage of the Land of the Rising Sun, presented in a personal, even subjective way, by the author whose first trip to Japan dates back to the summer 1989.

The first part of the book focuses on the “culture shock” he experienced during his two-month industrial internship at Kobe Steel in Kobe, Kansai region, in 1989.

The second part covers the beginning of a broader period starting in October 1992, in Kyoto, the cultural capital. This is a phase of adaptation to everyday life, in the specific case of a scholarship student in Japan.

The third part of this work does not cover a specific period: it is an attempt to summarise the different cultural notions that your modest guide has assimilated over the years.

Finally, the fourth part entitled “Cultural Illumination” is a bit the culmination of this long journey of discovery and adaptation. Driven by his inspiration, the author tries to connect the two civilisations through texts and attempts to establish bridges between the different types of theatrical expression.
